Lutein (from the Latin "luteus", meaning "yellow") is a naturally occurring carotenoid. Lutein is used by the body as an antioxidant, and for blue light absorption.
Lutein is present in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, as well as in carrots, squash, and other orange and yellow fruits and vegetables.
Other research has found lutein and zeaxanthin can inhibit thickening of the walls of carotid arteries and LDL-induced migration of monocytes to human artery cell walls. These are potential mechanisms for lutein's protective effect in cardiovascular disease.
